Due to they are the best, so the whole Singapore's New Immigrant Chine artists was tried their best to Dorby Yips calligraphy style, really no shame yet those New Immigrant Chine artists work was real low quality, I would say, if those New Immigrant Chine artists could improve their own Rainbow Calligraphy from their own China Mainland style, that would be perfect, unfortunately, so far those artist I came across only know how to copy, in a failure way.This guy was doing his unicycling musng performance in the event.Special "Lohei" dishes!

The was great I involved in the SMRT Circle Line Pre-Opening Event. I was in-charge Silhouette Cutting (or Shadow Cutting) for the public who that a free rise today.I had been arranged to do my roving silhouette cutting at 9 different MRT stations in the indicated time frame, that means I have to do my "Roving" services within 9 different places for my roving silhouette cutting for the public in this event. The was fun and my first time doing such "roving" job. haahaa!There are musician performing in the MRT train while I traveling to one of the station.Kamal Dollah was doing caricature in the event as well.Why don't have my face? Great I had a chance do my silhouette cutting at Hua Hin, Thailand, a place that located at the slim part on the map of Thailand, which 200 plus km from Bangkok ;p I had taken 4 hours taxi to this place from Suvarbhumi Airport at Bangkok!There were Tiffany Show at the beach!First time I seen 3 Chinese Opera Mask Changing performance masters perform at the same time and at the beach as well! After 10 years doing silhouette cutting, I found that, doing silhouette cutting is like doing stage performance, but this stage are really small just withing 1 meter - 2 meters area that surrounding you.Why I say like that? Look, since we had surrounding by the crowd, then we have to do our best. Do you realized the attractive of this art was we can just cut out a guest's side profile without drawing and everyone was was keen to know why we can do it without pre-draw the guest's side profile but just cut out a very look alike portrait silhouette, technically, skill involved actually.

Since such interest curiousness from the crowd, as a silhouette artist, in my view, we should make it as a performance to increase the entertaining level while we at work, just like a magician, like a dancer, like a singer that impress our guests.

"I am not the best, but I always try my best", this is my concept while I at work, it always help my maintain my artistic level and quality of my work in certain standard.

We should always in the right mood, enthusiastic attitude and right (or high) morale while we at work, hence we sure can produce nice and professional artworks.

The Quantity of Silhouette Cutting within an Hour's Event booking

As a professional Silhouette Cutting, I would say, in an hour's booking we can be produce average about 40 pieces of silhouettes which as large as our palm size.

Basically, a standard palm size portrait silhouette can produce within a minutes, meanwhile, exclude the time taken for us to put the artwork in plastic bag and the time spend in guiding the guest to pose correctly.

I don's see any reason for a silhouette artist require more than a minutes to produce a standard palm size non complex shape portrait silhouette.

Those who produce less than 30 pieces silhouette in an hour's event booking, they either apprentice or they are taking it for granted to do it slowly to kill the booking time and try to earn easy money.

Singapore is a branded world class great country, hence, as a professional, we should always maintain our high standard for our artwork, both quality and quantity.

How long do you need to produce a cutting in this shape, which in a mobile phone size?

As a professional Portrait Silhouette Artist, a silhouette to be produce is usually done within a minute in a A6 paper (a quarter size of A4, or it look similar to our palm size), plus the time we put the artworks to the standard plastic bag with the background, it will be average 40 pieces artwork can be produced within an hour's booking.

Any artist who only produce 7 pieces silhouette cutting or much lesser than at least 30 pieces cutting within an hour's event booking in a big crowd's event, that mean they are fake artist or either purposely do it super slow to kill the booking time.This quantity standard, not set by me, is the feedback from many guests and clients that having such demand.

Due to people traveled to many countries easily nowadays, there are more and more people know how to judge our artworks.

The Standard of Silhouette Art in Singapore

Silhouette art is about the side profile or shadow of a person, animal or objects.

In my research, experiences and my view, a standard portrait silhouette which in A5 size (about 210mm x 150mm) or A6 size (about 150mm x 105mm) should be produced within a minutes unless the side profile of the guest was really complex, hence, a real silhouette artist should be able to produce 35-50 pieces cutting within an hour during the event whether they are do it in a stationary way or roving way.

If any artist you that came across only able to produced less than 35 pieces silhouette cutting within an hour’s booking (for your majority normal hair style guests), that means he or she is an in experienced new comer.
I did came across few artist that only able to produce 7 pieces cutting within an hour’s booking, even thought they had been in the event line more than 4 years, unfortunately in my view they are cheating the public, they are cheating the event companies, they spoiling this name of the world classed country.

Which Side to do the Silhouette?

Many guests were asking me which side of their face from side view is the best, to me it doesn’t make any different.

Technically, the producing of a portrait silhouette (side profile or the portrait’s side viewed shadow) is emphasized on the edge of the shape of the neck portion, to the jaw, the mouth, the nose, forehead till the shape of the hair style and etc.

Not like caricature or portrait drawing, silhouette cutting would not describe the rest or the details like what type of eye, what type shape of the ear and so ford, therefore hardly differentiate which side view of your portrait silhouette had been produced from.

Hence we are very demand on the likeness of the final product for sure.Talking about the likeness, not many people can tell by themselves whether the silhouette artwork being done was look alike with them or not, this is because in the whole world, majority of the human being only emphasized the front look of their own faces through the mirror, therefore the guests need to get their friends to tell them whether the silhouette artwork being done whether looks like them or not.

Just did Chinese Paper Cutting Demo cum workshop to an event for Chinese Mid Autumn Festival. Many guests were very interesting to participate in this demo and workshop.

I just realized many people did not know how to use scissors, so I had tried my best to guide them.

Talking about Chinese Paper Cutting, the traditional way was to draw the design on the back of the red paper then do the related cutting.

Chinese Paper Cutting is actual belonging to one of the graphic design category in my view; one of the methods to produce it was using the template. We can just use the computer to design it and then print out the design and stable it on the red paper and do the cutting.

Glad to complete a silhouette cutting booking for a wedding event at Raffles Hotel Singapore. To me it just a Sunday, but that was a surprise after watched the news report, today is 20th September 2009, which in numeric form is 20092009!

Hmm..based on such 'Auspicious Date', in future that will be 20.10.2010, 20.11.2011, 20.12.2012....life is very interesting!

It had been many times that many people asked me why cant I do a front view silhouette cutting of their portrait, the reason is because in traditional silhouette cutting which very emphasized on the outline of the artwork was hardly tell that is the person’s portrait if they compare the art piece with the real person; because usually not much people having a strong features during the event unless they really make it a big different.

That was what I mean having strong feature front the front view ;p

Thought cutting 2 persons in one piece of paper is one of the difficult tasks; because you really need to handle the scoring of the portrait size very carefully else the artwork will not be nice eg. One head too big and one head too small, the aiming direction of both portraits in your artworks was different etc.The hair style and the related accessories of the guests, is one of the factor that affect the ‘design’ (which mean how you like to arrange them in you art piece) of the artworks.

Further Detail Cutting

The traditional silhouette cutting is mainly cut the shape of the portrait of the guest, I think if we cut more detail on it, which will be more belonging to paper art area.

Silhouette cutting can be seen it as sort of black and white graphic, but if we do it for performance purpose, professional speaking, we should do it within a minutes; hence within an hour’s event booking, we should be able to produce 35-45 pieces (including put in the plastic bag for the guests.

Down here, I just try to explore further cut in details for the silhouette art works.To do a silhouette for more detail, seems it need more time to decide what type of cutting you are going to do, I talking about just observe and cut in the further detail without and hand drawn steps; that seems need a lot of research, experiments and practices.How to do a silhouette cutting with more details in a shortest timing yet it still looks good, that is the challenge.

The Cutting Size of My Silhouette Cutting

I usually prepared the black paper in A6 size (a quarter of A4 size about 15cm long, close to 3R photo size), and I will put the artworks in a same size light yellow based background paper in a clear plastic bag to put in my artworks.

I set my artwork in this size is because that was easily for the guest to put in their pocket. Such size is also about a size of our palm; when you hold the artworks on your palm, you are able to view the impact of the artworks.

To make my artwork able to give such feel, I always try to made use of the full area of the paper, thought this could be one of the way to show your scoring skill and how good you can control your hand to produce what you see, especially we are doing a show in the events to catch crowd.Expect special case like client asked my to produce a smaller size for their own framing size purpose, else I do not do it in such small size by using the A6 size paper, because it will looks ugly once you put it in the plastic bag with an A6 size background.Art is nothing right or wrong, but in my view, doing silhouette cutting in an entertaining purpose, the art piece size should be in certain visually comfortable size, else that will be too weak for such presentation.

Just did Chinese Paper Cutting Demo cum quick paper cutting trial workshop foe the public during the event last weekend.There were many performances during this event, including Latin dance, Malay cultural singing performance, Filipino martial arts and etc.

That was quite fun to guide the public to do the Chinese paper cutting, many of them was felt paper cutting art was very interesting and they realised this folk art it looks simple but need some skill to do it.Some participants’ work.My ‘Silhouette Chinese Paper Cutting’Chinese world famous ‘Si Chuan Face/Mask Changing’ art was the climate of the show, ecveryone love it! Most of the time I only do single portrait silhouette cutting which cut one person at a time during events. I seldom couple or group silhouette cutting because it will take longer time to produce such artwork especially during the limited booking hours. Usually, if it is a wedding event, I only do for the wedding bridal and broom, the rest of the guests will only get my single portrait silhouette done.Single portrait silhouette cutting is much easier than couple or group silhouette cutting, because producing 2 or more portrait profiles on the same piece of paper need to control the scale carefully, you also need to know whose profile to be produce first.Just like drawing the real portrait, all the face in the drawing must be logically event, if one head moch bigger than the others in the drawing, that will looks strange.

Sometimes some guest will not really wanted to pose right degree of side view for you, they just wanted to take a side peek of how you do the cutting, this could be a difficult job for us, usually I will either ask them to pose correct or I move myself to the right angle to complete the silhouette cutting.If the guest having a few degree facing me instead of showing me their right side view, I will cut the shape of the glasses to highlight the likeness of the guests, anyway, provided those who worn glasses, because without the detail in the artwork that was hardly tell the likeness anymore.

That was great that I had a chance involved in this very high class private event today. I met Mr Yong, one of Singapore’s famous Chinese Calligrapher. Tonight Mr Yong Cheong Thye (www.yonggallery.com) was in-charge Chinese Calligrapher writing on Chinese Fans; if I am not wrong, Mr Yong and one of the Hong Kong Chinese Calligrapher Mr Yip are the only artists who able to provide Chinese Fans in the events market, if you see some artists doing Chinese Calligraphy on Chinese Fans, which means high chances the Chinese Fans was provided by the event companies. That was surprise to see Raju the Kacang Putin Man and The Tarik Man doing Parrot Fortune Telling in the event!Just self photo taking.The function room was serious decorated carefully!Many unique and nice props!

Just did an event this afternoon for a pre-event in a wedding lunch. Unlike corporate event, the guests usually come in whole families and relatives of the wedding couples, hence that could be in all ages which like few months old babies to 80 or 90 years old grand relatives.As an entertainer, my job is to create the relaxing and enjoyable atmosphere for the guests, that could be very easy, could be very difficult as well; depends what type of crowd you are having in this event.

As a roving artist, you need to know which guests to start your entertainment, if you are doing you entertainment in stationary style, that will be depend what kind of guests come to you first; your experience will help you how to handle the guests in different circumstances.

There are Rock Band performance in this wedding lunch! Cool!

That was always great to meet nice guests whose appreciate my works in the event, their words made my morale getting higher and higher hence I can produce many high standard and nice artworks, I believe all entertainer having the same feeling.Sometimes you can see the ballroom still having busy setting up for the event you are attended to while the time you reach the ballroom, this is because the previous event in that ballroom just finished not long ago; you can see props and stage setting specialists, table setting up staffs, backdrop artists and related specialists fighting with the extremely short deadline to get everything done in time.One interesting prop!

Just saw this photo from today’s newspaper, did a silhouette for it.The masked navy officer is very hard to see in our usual life, it is quiet unique to me, just a silhouette for it.After totally 5 hours which split into 2 weeks, finally I completer this “Million Dollars” Chinese wording paper cutting in 4pcs stacked of 120gsm gold paper. I don’t think will do this design for event, just for my own art pieces purpose, because it really difficult to use hand cut and real time consuming. Heehee!
