Roving Silhouette Cutting in Wedding Event

Just did an event this afternoon for a pre-event in a wedding lunch. Unlike corporate event, the guests usually come in whole families and relatives of the wedding couples, hence that could be in all ages which like few months old babies to 80 or 90 years old grand relatives. As an entertainer, my job is to create the relaxing and enjoyable atmosphere for the guests, that could be very easy, could be very difficult as well; depends what type of crowd you are having in this event.

As a roving artist, you need to know which guests to start your entertainment, if you are doing you entertainment in stationary style, that will be depend what kind of guests come to you first; your experience will help you how to handle the guests in different circumstances.

There are Rock Band performance in this wedding lunch! Cool!

Nice table setting!

Some Backstage Job

Like many event entertaining items, my silhouette cutting also need to do some ‘backstage’ jobs which need to trim the papers and the background paper and put it in to plastic bags before I do the show.

Some artists only put the background paper in the plastic bag after they did artworks during the event. There’s nothing wrong but it reducing the quantities you are going to produce within the booking hour, that could be one way to ‘kill the time’, but I think that not so professional.

Except the background paper was given by the event organizer which printed with their event logos last minutes when I reach the working place, otherwise I always prepare them by myself before I go to the events.

The paper for me to do the silhouette or side profile cutting, usually in 1/4 of A4 or roughly about our palm size, so do the background paper.Of course I also prepared some A5 size background and the cutting paper for those cutting in couples. .Some event organizers was requested did it in A5 size as well. For my silhouette cutting, whether is in palm size or the slightly bigger size like A5 size, always inclusive the cut-out piece which is the reverse side of the original artworks. I usually put is in reverse side of the plastic bag.

Not every type of cut-out of the silhouette can be use, like the couples design, due to it needed to cut through the paper, hence it will be throwing away.

Just a little complaint

It was very interesting to see people from the side. I like to see the different of peoples’ features, and like to see their difference hair styles. During diner & dance, that’s lot more thing to see while the guest came with hair clips, ribbons and decoration, costume etc.

For silhouette cutting, the artwork usually not recognize by the person’s side profile that being cut, only recognize by his or her friends, because usually everyone seldom see their own side profile.

For many years experience, western guests was much more appreciated silhouette art, Singaporean who have better art knowledge was appreciated it as well, but not guest from China (except little amount of nice china people I ever met).

They always look down on non-china citizen who do this art, at least most of the time I came across such comment from China guest: “Huh? Silhouette Cutting? China have a lot what, do it for what?”

They believe they are the best in this art, or either silhouette cutting is a very low class art in China due to too many people doing, due to too many fake artists in China doing this art.

What I was thinking: If your country is really so good, why you come to Singapore? If you are educated people, then you should show some respect!

I am not the best nor the lousiest silhouette cutting artist, but I had taken few years doing practice and research on this kind of art.

I would like to say, lots China people in Singapore who doing fringe art during events was fake or low standard, they seriously spoilt the name of the real China artists. I am not like to talk bad about China people, I had met some real good and professional China artist, I just like to point out such small group of peoples had spoiling the world.

Unfortunately, most Singaporean public still believe as long as china artist, they are the best, so usually you can see, during the fringe art session in the event , china artist’s queue was longer than local artist. Maybe as a Chinese said: “The moon at oversea was nicer and rounder than our country.”
